How to preserve the resilience of our country in polarized times will be the topic of the Bosworth Lecture in conjunction with the Bristol Fourth of July Committee on Thursday, June 13 at 6:30PM at St Michael’s Church in Bristol. The event is free and open to the public.

“A Republic If You Can Keep It” is the title of the presentation by RI Secretary of State Gregg Amore. His speech will center on what we as a democracy need to do to keep our republic, focusing on the challenges that democracy faces in today’s political climate.

A longtime history teacher, Amore will also speak about the importance of civics and history education for today’s high school youth. In 2008 he was recognized as the RI History Teacher of the Year by the Daughters of the Revolution.

Amore said he would gladly entertain questions after his presentation, followed by an informal reception to meet visitors over refreshments in the church.

As an RI State Representative for East Providence from 2012 to 2022, Amore became the 30th RI Secretary of State in 2023. He said he puts veterans affairs at the top of his priority list and Secretary Amore is an ardent supporter of veterans and the issues they face.

In 2021 he cosponsored the law to require that students demonstrate proficiency in civics education before high school graduation, earning him recognition with the League of Women Voters’ Civic Engagement Award.

Amore graduated from Providence College with a BA in history and from New England College with a masters in public policy. For 27 years he taught Advanced Placement US History, Civics and Government at East Providence High School.

His commitment to public service earned him recognition from Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the American Cancer Society. In 2022 he was the recipient of the RI Coalition Against Domestic Violence Legislative Champion Award.

A lifelong resident of East Providence, he and his wife Lee are the parents of two adult daughters.
